BACKGROUND

Park Attwood Clinic was established in 1978 and now offers nearly 30 years experience in the field of anthroposophic medicine. It is owned by the Park Attwood Therapeutic Association Ltd, which is an Industrial & Provident Society for the public benefit, and is governed by a Board of Directors who are un-paid. Although the clinic is a not-for-profit organisation that is accepted by the Inland Revenue as an organisation that has full charity tax exemptions, following the recent introduction of the Charities Act 2006 Park Attwood will apply to become a registered charity within the next twelve months.

While each of the groups within the medical team - doctors, nurses and therapists - are subject to regulation by their own professional body, Park Attwood is itself registered with and inspected by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCi), to provide residential in-patient care for up to 14 people (go to www.csci.org.uk for a copy of the CSCis most recent inspection report on Park Attwood).

anthroposophic medicine

Rudolf Steiner and Ita WegmanThe integrated care practised at Park Attwood, which brings together conventional and complementary medicine, is based upon the anthroposophic thinking and pioneering work of scientist and philosopher Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) and doctor Ita Wegman (1876-1943). It is not essential to know about the background philosophy to benefit from Park Attwoods treatment. Click here for more information.

Although it is the only anthroposophic clinic in the UK of its kind, Park Attwood is part of the wider anthroposophic medical movement, both in this country and abroad. In the UK, this includes a number of GP practices which operate within the NHS and CAHSC (Council for Anthroposophical Health and Social Care). The Park Attwood Clinic"I knew almost nothing about anthroposophic medicine before coming here. I came seeking to build up my immune system following a mastectomy and radiotherapy - preferring the idea of assisting my natural defences with mistletoe therapy to the poisoning of chemotherapy. What has unfolded has been deeply enriching - an expanded view of what my immune system consists of, the realisation that it is affected on many levels. As the days of therapies with movement, art, massage and mistletoe injections passed, I came to appreciate more and more that here at last was a place where the spiritual and physical journeys are pulled together. For everyone working at Park Attwood I would like to express my deepest gratitude for a glimpse of how hospitals might be."
